Rranscript Video:
- 0:10 | We have won the great pool now we will win the last war
- 0:24 | We’ll rip her out fruit and stem
- 0:36 | Oh
- 0:37 | We’ve been building towards this for so long
- 0:40 | Now you think back to the very?
- 0:42 | Beginning of the very first episode and it’s beyond the wall where the White Walkers are stalking a group of Rangers
- 0:48 | so this is the culmination of one of the key storylines and the whole show and
- 0:53 | This is for everything
- 0:54 | We’ve been talking
- 0:55 | for a long time how Knight Kings forces have been growing in power and most of the living have been kind of openly
- 1:01 | disdainful of the threat and now there’s no choice but to fight it
- 1:07 | I
- 1:10 | Really love the way the first 10 minutes or so plays out because there’s so much tension before there’s any encounter with the enemy you
- 1:19 | Know as much as they try to conceal it people are terrified because this is this is death coming for them
- 1:26 | You know so much of it is just kind of on one hand setting the mood for the episode and the other hand showing us
- 1:31 | where these characters are going to be the entire episode takes place in Winterfell and you have
- 1:35 | 19 or 20 characters all involved in a very chaotic
- 1:39 | situation that needs many many locations to service it
- 1:47 | Because it’s such a long battle and this episode is important that we feel the ebb and flow
- 1:51 | And so there are moments when you think things are going a little bit better for the living. Tell them to lift their swords
- 1:57 | we felt like it was important to have that moment of Hope when Mel comes in and lights up their oxen and they’ll
- 2:04 | Ride off into battle. Nobody is a signal to ladies
- 2:15 | One of our characters to feel like that this may be this is all gonna work out maybe things are all gonna be okay
- 2:20 | We’ve seen how devastating a Dothraki charge can be just with the regular swords
- 2:24 | And now when they’re galloping into combat with flaming rocks, it’s it’s what could possibly stand against that?
- 2:34 | What they see is just the end of the Dothraki essentially
- 2:38 | they have a plan and it’s important to wait for the knight King to reveal himself and then have two dragons against one dragon and
- 2:45 | A really good chance of defeating him one thing that they couldn’t have foreseen was Danny’s reaction to seeing the Dothraki
- 2:52 | Decimated John is the person who wants to stick to the plan
- 2:55 | But the Dothraki aren’t John’s they’re not loyal to John
- 2:58 | they’re loyal to Danny and I think that Danny can’t bring herself to just watch them die and so
- 3:04 | The plan starts to fall apart the second she gets on her
- 3:08 | Dragon, so he does too and and then we take it from there
- 3:25 | We knew this episode was gonna be almost entirely battle and that can get really boring really quickly
- 3:31 | You can
- 3:32 | Watch it for a certain number of minutes before
- 3:35 | The effect starts to dampen part of it was making sure that we really stayed focused on the characters
- 3:39 | and so whether it’s Arya’s storyline or
- 3:43 | Sansa
- 3:44 | Tyrion down the Crypt or Jon Snow and
- 3:46 | Dany up in the Dragons kind of like all these separate little battles within the within the greater battle
- 3:56 | Lyanna Mormont was supposed to be a one scene character and then we met Bella Ramsay and we realized that we would
- 4:02 | Not be doing our jobs if we kept her as a one scene character
- 4:07 | My mother wasn’t a great beauty or any other kind of beauty. She was a great warrior though
- 4:12 | She died fighting for your brother robb
- 4:14 | we knew that you can’t give a big death to everybody who dies in this battle because it would have
- 4:21 | Which would have been too much but there also she were to die. There was no way to
- 4:25 | To not make a moment of it. So that’s where the zombie giant comes in
- 4:32 | It just did add a whole level of complexity to that moment that I’m sure a lot of people would have been
- 4:39 | Okay with not having there if we had demanded to cut it
- 4:43 | But I think they also understood why we needed to give one of the strongest
- 4:47 | Smaller people in the show a chance to go out taking down one of the strongest larger things. We’ve we’ve ever seen in show
- 5:08 | Any situation where people are fighting
- 5:11 | All rightie needs to play a central role because she’s one of the best at it and she’s one of the most fun to watch
- 5:16 | Doing it even barrio. She can’t take on a horde of whites by herself. And especially when her head gets smacked
- 5:23 | She’s no longer at a hundred percent. It’s just about survival at that point
- 5:27 | She’s completely
- 5:29 | Unstoppable and she never loses her cool and that’s been amazing and it’s a lot of fun to watch but it’s also it’s one
- 5:34 | Note so we decided that almost rewinding the clock on who Arya Stark is – back before
- 5:41 | She became a sort of magical figure that she’s become would really be interesting
- 5:46 | It would also give us a chance to change up the nature of the story. We were telling
- 5:52 | We talked about Winterfell is kind of the home for the show
- 5:55 | And and one of the things that always struck us as a horrific aspect of this is that these hallways and rooms
- 6:00 | where we spend a lot of good times and
- 6:02 | Quiet times with characters that we care about has now become a horror set because it’s been invaded by undead soldiers
- 6:11 | Before that point there’s sort of an agoraphobic to the whole thing were you in this giant wide-open space and everywhere you look
- 6:21 | Something that could be coming to kill you
- 6:23 | once you get inside Winterfell everything contracts and
- 6:26 | The walls literally start to close in around you and something is there in the dark with you
- 6:31 | But you don’t know exactly where it is, and we thought that the pace change in the tonal change
- 6:35 | It was really important to have that in this episode. Otherwise, the episode would start to feel
- 6:42 | Mr. To feel monotonous
- 6:47 | Ricard’s we thought it was important that whatever the plan was that it would not just work out because that would be kind of dull
- 6:54 | While there’s no reason to know for certain that the fire wouldn’t kill or destroy the night king
- 7:00 | There’s also no particular reason to believe that it would and then few moments after this happens the night King brings them a whole new
- 7:08 | Larger undead problem by taking all of their own who have been killed in the course this battle and turning them into the enemy. I
- 7:21 | Mean we talked about various endings for or for a long time
- 7:24 | But you know you think about Jorah from the very first time we met him
- 7:27 | he was with Danny and from that time he’s been
- 7:30 | Mostly by her side part of Joris tragedy is that he was in love with the woman who couldn’t love him back
- 7:35 | But he’s accepted that for quite a long time at the same time
- 7:38 | He was going to fight for her as long as he could and as well as he could
- 7:42 | There had never been a moment where she more needed
- 7:45 | Someone to fight to protect her than this moment and if he could have chosen a way to die
- 7:50 | This is how he would have chosen to die. So it was something we thought would be
- 7:56 | powerful to give him
- 8:05 | The reason the gods was chosen is because it’s such a
- 8:07 | source of power for those who believe in the old gods and for bran in particular so we know that the weirwood tree and the
- 8:13 | Three-eyed Raven have a very deep connection. I was always the location where bran was going to be waiting for the night King
- 8:20 | I just want you to know
- 8:23 | The things I did everything you did brought you where you are now
- 8:29 | Where you belong
- 8:32 | Oh
- 8:34 | it’s not like the show is entirely about people redeeming themselves, and then it’s all over but if you if the
- 8:40 | Canvas is big enough. There are spaces for those
- 8:44 | redemptive moments
- 8:45 | I think what was really important for Theon at the end was hearing that thank you from Bram because Brando is what’s gonna happen Theon
- 8:56 | You’re a good man
- 8:59 | Thank you
- 9:00 | He knows he’s dead. He knows he’s not gonna be able to kill the night king
- 9:03 | But I think what’s really?
- 9:04 | Heroic about his action is that we’re all gonna die and we know we’re not to be able to defeat death at the end
- 9:08 | But you know, it’s it’s how you face those final moments and he chooses to run straight at it and keep ties
- 9:14 | You know in a way that um makes us really proud of him and and the journey is gone through
- 9:26 | For god, I think it’s probably three years now or something
- 9:29 | We’ve known that it was gonna be Daria who delivers that fatal blow
- 9:33 | She seemed like the best candidate provided we weren’t thinking about her in that moment
- 9:38 | one of the great things about having this many people you care about you know sequence together is that you can kind of
- 9:43 | Pull people’s attention and focus to people that they care about a lot like John and like Danny Theon and bran
- 9:50 | Not to mention Tyrion and Sansa at the crypt. So you’re going all over the place with people who you’re desperately worried for and
- 9:56 | Hopefully you forget about the fact that already start
- 10:00 | Rattling battle drums playing and going towards some purpose and we don’t know what until it happens
- 10:06 | we hope to kind of avoid the expected and Jon Snow has always been the hero the one who’s in the Savior, but it
- 10:12 | Just didn’t seem right to us for this for this moment
- 10:15 | We knew it had to be Valyrian steel to the exact spot where the child of the forest
- 10:20 | Put the dragon glass blade to create the night King and he’s uncreated by the Valyrian steel at the end of it
- 10:27 | It’s it’s still it’s a it’s a victory for the living but at great cost because some of our favorite characters fall along the way
- 10:35 | We knew from the beginning once we handed the outline in what we were in for the directors Miguel Sahaj anak
- 10:42 | Took what we were doing and defined this episode Miguel did a tremendous
- 10:47 | Amount of heroic heavy lifting on this front. He knew that the planning wasn’t there
- 10:52 | we never would have ended up with the
- 10:54 | Consistent excellence that he delivered it is to their immense credit that not only that they endured it
- 11:01 | But that they did such a great job the whole time. They were there
- 11:03 | It’s a real testament to the entire Belfast crew who gave us something that no amount of money could ever buy
