Rranscript Video:
- 0:00 | I played XP Rios on Stumptown I am an
- 0:04 | ex-marine I have been out of the service
- 0:07 | now for about 10 years and I’ve been
- 0:09 | sort of floating ever since my time in
- 0:11 | the military she lives in Portland which
- 0:15 | is which is a wonderful town she hasn’t
- 0:17 | been able to hold down really a steady
- 0:19 | job and the idea of becoming a p.i is
- 0:24 | brought to her by Oh Myles Hoffman who
- 0:28 | is one of our detective characters
- 0:33 | Dex is um she is she’s a very
- 0:35 | complicated woman and does not apologize
- 0:38 | for that this is a woman who suffers
- 0:41 | from PTSD and chooses not to deal with
- 0:44 | it has sort of shelved it her entire
- 0:46 | life since since things have happened to
- 0:50 | her she has a drinking problem she has a
- 0:53 | gambling problem
- 0:54 | she is very
- 0:57 | she’s like a person who lives in the
- 0:59 | moment she is a woman who cannot hold a
- 1:02 | relationship we’re exploring her
- 1:05 | sexuality she likes men she likes women
- 1:08 | she’s sort of up for whatever the night
- 1:10 | we’ll we’ll invite her to be a part of
- 1:14 | so she’s you know she’s floating a
- 1:17 | little bit and it’s certainly one of the
- 1:19 | things that makes her a bit dangerous
- 1:21 | but I also think that because of that
- 1:24 | she’s very she adapts to situations and
- 1:27 | she knows people really well because
- 1:29 | she’s been through a lot
- 1:32 | it is a procedural in the sense that
- 1:34 | there are going to be cases throughout
- 1:36 | the series they’re not necessarily going
- 1:39 | to be wrapped up tightly at the end of
- 1:41 | each episode they will probably carry on
- 1:43 | through multiple episodes certainly the
- 1:45 | characters that we meet on those cases
- 1:46 | will probably come back will stay with
- 1:49 | us for multiple episodes so it is not
- 1:51 | your typical sort of network procedural
- 1:54 | show it is you know we talk a lot about
- 1:57 | characters first and when a case comes
- 1:59 | up it’s more about how the case affects
- 2:02 | the dynamics between the characters
- 2:04 | rather than what the case is about each
- 2:07 | week
- 2:10 | this is obviously a woman who has
- 2:11 | experienced something very very
- 2:13 | traumatic lives were lost in that
- 2:16 | experience but I think it’s relative and
- 2:21 | I think that when you go through
- 2:23 | something that is traumatizing and you
- 2:25 | experience a loss or you experience
- 2:28 | something in your personal life it’s
- 2:29 | you’re affected by it and I think that
- 2:31 | we’re all sort of dealing with some kind
- 2:34 | of PTSD in our alive so that was an easy
- 2:36 | thing for me to sort of break down and
- 2:38 | mentally hone in on personally and then
- 2:42 | it’s about in terms of the show layering
- 2:45 | it in in a believable grounded way where
- 2:50 | this is a person who is who is dealing
- 2:51 | with this and and and and not dealing
- 2:54 | with us who is who’s dealing with the
- 2:56 | symptoms of this
- 2:59 | and onto they both they they’re the
- 3:02 | bosses of what they do they’ve worked
- 3:04 | really hard to get to where they are
- 3:05 | they’re both very good at what they do
- 3:07 | and I think that for my character it is
- 3:11 | inspiring I think that she’s never
- 3:13 | really liked Maddox has never really
- 3:15 | liked Authority and both of them are
- 3:17 | very authoritative women so I think that
- 3:20 | she struggles with that but I think in
- 3:22 | the end what will benefit from is
- 3:26 | hopefully seeing Dex grow and learn from
- 3:28 | these women and certainly the audience
- 3:30 | will benefit from seeing these women
- 3:32 | portrayed on screen in such a wonderful
- 3:34 | powerful way
- 3:36 | the description of this show is cobie
- 3:39 | smulders plays that private investigator
- 3:41 | and she’s got to figure out cases and
- 3:44 | we’re all the characters who surround
- 3:46 | her life
- 3:48 | when I met with Jason on our show our
- 3:50 | showrunner he said that Grey’s a
- 3:51 | character that when you meet him what
- 3:54 | you first see is not what you get you
- 3:56 | learn more and more and he’s a guy who
- 3:58 | has a dark past and has a lot of secrets
- 4:00 | and I’ve been having a lot of fun
- 4:02 | playing that storyline
- 4:04 | and what pulled me to Stumptown was
- 4:07 | there’s not a character in this show
- 4:08 | who’s not interested and there’s not a
- 4:10 | character in the show whose backstory I
- 4:12 | know I that I want to see more of and I
- 4:15 | want to I think the audience will too so
- 4:17 | it’s just deep with talent
- 4:22 | I know what I’ve had a lot of fun with
- 4:23 | while making it so far is just the mix
- 4:26 | of tone in that in a scene will have
- 4:28 | some jokes will have some drama will
- 4:30 | have some action that there really is a
- 4:33 | nice mix so far and I think our writers
- 4:35 | are doing a great job of moving story
- 4:37 | while also stop and everyone small to
- 4:38 | have a little bit of fun so I think
- 4:40 | it’ll be a show that if the audience
- 4:42 | gives it a chance they’ll feel like they
- 4:43 | really know these characters but then
- 4:45 | they’ll be able to go on journeys and
- 4:47 | adventures that I’ve been surprised
- 4:48 | we’re allowed to do in a you know a
- 4:51 | weekly show
- 4:53 | character aspect of our show is
- 4:55 | something that really intrigued me in it
- 4:57 | because I don’t think I’m fully in all
- 4:58 | the procedural stuff
- 4:59 | I think Gray’s character was really
- 5:02 | brought in just for character and just
- 5:03 | to you know give an extra layer to Dex
- 5:06 | and then when you know more about his
- 5:08 | story and the crimes he was involved in
- 5:10 | it’s just to add complexity to the whole
- 5:12 | world so the serialization of it all is
- 5:16 | more Kobe’s journey and I’m one of the
- 5:20 | characters who just kind of had a tongue
- 5:22 | to flavor to it I think
- 5:25 | about this woman who kind of falls into
- 5:31 | this default private investigator role
- 5:36 | she is kind of confronted with issues
- 5:42 | that she’s dealing with from her past
- 5:44 | and she struggled you know trying to
- 5:47 | hold down a job and then like Moke most
- 5:51 | alcoholics you find this moment of
- 5:52 | clarity and you find your purpose in
- 5:56 | which something you’re good at and
- 5:58 | obviously that makes you want to do more
- 6:00 | of it and what’s interesting is to watch
- 6:02 | her kind of navigate this world and at
- 6:05 | the same time deal with and navigate her
- 6:10 | own personal demons
- 6:14 | has some issues from his past that he
- 6:17 | hasn’t quite resolved so he’s in essence
- 6:20 | he has his own PTSD that he’s got to
- 6:24 | kind of work around and at the same time
- 6:27 | navigating this kind of what would I
- 6:34 | call it interesting dynamic I wouldn’t
- 6:36 | call it a relationship I call it an
- 6:38 | interesting dynamic between Hoffman and
- 6:40 | Dex
- 6:41 | and I think it’s it’s like nothing I’ve
- 6:45 | ever played with before in television
- 6:47 | and film that’s why I think it’s
- 6:49 | actually fresh to call it a dynamic I
- 6:52 | mean until further notice
- 6:54 | I’d call it a dynamic
- 6:57 | people will see that our show is it has
- 7:02 | a tone to it that is rooted in the
- 7:06 | graphic novel world so it’s not always
- 7:08 | based in realism so much as it is this
- 7:11 | graphic novel world and that’s something
- 7:15 | that I think kind of lifts up the tone
- 7:19 | of the show from other shows that are
- 7:22 | out there and somewhat more grounded in
- 7:24 | reality
- 7:27 | Cass is great I mean you know I do a lot
- 7:32 | with as Camryn Manheim reversed and the
- 7:36 | badass women of the show and so I do a
- 7:39 | lot with a lot of scenes with Kobe a lot
- 7:42 | of scenes with Cameron and you know it’s
- 7:45 | fun it’s so much fun to kind of play
- 7:48 | with you know people who are not only
- 7:50 | just professional actors but have a
- 7:53 | great sense of humor and comedic timing
- 7:55 | so that we can really kind of bounce off
- 7:57 | each other like jazz so it’s been kind
- 7:59 | of cool in that way
- 8:02 | there’s definitely an interesting tone
- 8:04 | to the show you know there are some
- 8:06 | procedural elements for sure in that
- 8:08 | there will be cases that kind of come
- 8:10 | and go but at the end of the day I think
- 8:14 | everybody will hold on to these
- 8:16 | characters and want to want to come back
- 8:18 | week after week to watch these
- 8:20 | particular characters and see how they
- 8:22 | handle not only whatever’s in front of
- 8:25 | them case wise but also what it is that
- 8:28 | has been eating at them you know what I
- 8:32 | mean from the time we start the show to
- 8:34 | whenever we finish
