Music News: Natalie Imbrugliaâs LP Addresses Mental Health
Natalie Imbruglia is gearing up for a full-blown comeback, dropping her new album Algorithm on September 4 â and sheâs promising fans a version of herself theyâve never seen before.
The Torn icon, who dominated the late â90s and early 2000s, is stepping back into the spotlight with a record she says was born out of chaos, creativity and the toughest mental-health battle of her life.
Imbruglia says she built the album with a tight crew of collaborators â including MyRiot, David Sneddon, Fraser T Smith, Snow Patrolâs Gary Lightbody, Anu Pillai, Tobie Tripp, Mark Crew, and Dan Priddy â who were in the trenches with her from day one.
She said: âOn this record I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song.â âI really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off.â
But behind the scenes, things werenât as glossy as the synths.
The albumâs lead single Upside Down, out now, is the clearest window into that struggle â a bright, shimmering pop track built on the moment she realised she couldnât simply âpower throughâ anymore.
She said: âThe inability to control my emotions, wrestling with fight or flight mode, was awful, and I was reaching this critical point with it.â âIn a way, the song is about how sheer willpower â trying to force your way out of something â doesnât always work. You need tools, support.â
With the follow-up to 2021âs Firebird marking her first album in five years, Imbruglia is ready to take it straight to the stage.
Sheâs already locked in festival slots across the UK â including App-Fest, Replay, In It Together and Lazydays â plus dates in Spain, Sweden and Mexico, with more shows expected to drop soon.
